“If you do not …

cry

“If you do not breathe through writing, if you do not cry out in writing, or sing in writing, then don’t write, because our culture has no use for it.”
-Anais Nin

Do you feel what your writing as you write it? Or do you go back and read it only getting the real feeling then? Or do you not feel it at all? I often find myself laughing as I’m writing a particularly funny scene and at other times getting depressed when something bad has happened to my character, the emotion feeling so real its almost my own. Almost. Other times I am already feeling a certain emotion whether it be happiness, or sadness, and write a scene that plays to that emotion and I find that this is the time where I can put in the characters thoughts and feelings more accurately then when I just try to decide what he/ she must be thinking. It is such a strange experience to go back and see how much of myself ifs in my writing. Even my family has inadvertently ended up in my writing, a fact I only notice usually when describing a new character to someone and realize who its based off. In order to make it so real the reader is feeling it, I suppose it’s only necessary to put what’s real in it. Maybe this is why writers are such emotional people, they are constantly focusing on their feelings to put it in its purest form into their writing. I don’t necessarily mean were overly sensitive, I have met authors who were insensitive jerks, but when we feel something, I would have to say it’s a lot stronger of an emotion than the normal population would feel.
