Why do you write? For yourself? To see the joy in someone else as they read your masterpiece? Or maybe just to tell the story that you know needs to be told? Whatever your reason, there is a reason that you write, otherwise you wouldn’t write.
Well , I love to tell stories, always have and always will, but my ultimate goal is not to just tell my story, but to tell someone else’s. I am obsessive, which includes obsessing about random people that I’ve never met and probably wont ever meet, but I simply have to know every detail of their lives. It’s like my crack, the more I know, the more I obsess about them, and I have to know just one more detail about them. I wouldn’t say I’m a stalker because I have yet to meet anyone who I have obsessed about, but I’m probably the closest thing to a stalker that you can get. It’s not that I am enamored by their fame or fortune, but rather I am fascinated about what made them who they are, the little things that most people would never know about them but shaped the person that they became. I still remember the day I sat in a library and read a book about Michal Jackson and wished someone had wrote a story about his life, not the rise to fame that everyone knows, but rather the internal struggles that shaped who he was. He of course died, but that dream of telling the story of one of my many idols lives has always stayed with me. I love writing fiction and will never stop, but one day I dream to be so honored to be trusted with the story of one of the greatest people that have lived, and be allowed to breathe life into the story that would otherwise be lost to all who are as interested in the great as I am.
What is your dream, your ultimate wish for what you could do with your writing? Do you ever see yourself achieving this dream or do you just toss it aside as simply that, a dream?

I mostly write because in a way it feels like a purpose.
I wish for my writing to be shared more, and ultimately, maybe one day, be directed into the silver screens 🙂
July 8th, 2013 at 11:38 am
Ooooh that would be cool to see your writing becoming a movie!

I have to give an obvious answer first: because I sincerely can’t help it. But, I also write to put “out there” a “paradigm” view of the world that can only come from my eyes. My paradigm can be laid beside all the others for comparison and accepted or rejected–or just enjoyed or not enjoyed–hopefully the first. 🙂

Would you stop writing if no one liked it? I.don’t think I would be able to stop even if everyone said I was the worlds worst writer.
July 8th, 2013 at 12:22 pm
I would not be able to stop.

That’s true passion! Write on!
July 8th, 2013 at 12:47 pm
I write because I love the feeling of creation. I love that you can start with a blank canvas and shape the words and scenes into your very own interpretation of reality. It truly is wonderful. No one else sees the world in the exact same way that you do. Which makes each of our perspectives and renditions of the world very unique.

I truely feel that writing takes more artistic vision then most other arts. We arn’t just describing one moment of life, but a whole world of collective moments. Difficult but so rewarding!

I write to tell people the things I wished I had known when I was a bit younger. The stuff that they need to realize to be happy
July 8th, 2013 at 12:59 pm
It does seem that you can’t see what you truely have untill you’ve lost it. Young people do have the habit of lusting after things instead of enjoying the expiriences.

i think my dream is to add threads into the culture of human communication

Ah to change the world! Maybe not with world peace, but change is maybe even more important.

First and foremost I like playing with characters. I enjoy imagining different story lines and where the characters would go in life. It’s a fun addiction, there is always something going on in my head.
July 8th, 2013 at 6:13 pm
I completely know what you mean about it being an addiction. You simply can’t stop the flow of ideas once you start them!

Books have always held a strange power over me, ever since I was a kid. Writing one is like paying homage to the greats of the past while ensuring great books for the next generation to read. That is, if I ever finish writing it!
July 8th, 2013 at 6:12 pm
Lol, yes finishing the book is definitely the hardest part!

My dream has always been to share my writing, that others can see it. Paintings can be given for birthdays, or simply hung on the wall. A dance is performed, ditto with music, and people hear, or people see. But woe to manuscript that sits on the shelf and gathers dusts. Now, with the advent of the blog my dream is complete.

I remember the exact moment I wanted to be a writer. I had just finished reading book one of The Boxcar Children by Gertrude C. Warner. I thought, “I want to write something that makes people feel the way I do right now.”
Granted, it’s a bit weird for a 40 year old man to be reading children’s literature and getting his life’s purpose, but life’s crazy that way.
Just kiddin’. I read The Boxcar Children when I was a mere pup, but the rest is for true.

Your response made me laugh out loud, literally!

Thanks for following The Brass Rag. Feels like we have a good deal in common, except the people I tend to obsess over are made up…by me. 😉 looking forward to your comments!

I began to write as a cathartic measure but now I write for the joy of it. I feel I am less when I do not write. Since I’ve sent my first novel to an agent I feel it’s something I can do long term.
July 11th, 2013 at 8:56 am
Did you get super nervous when you sent it off?
July 11th, 2013 at 9:32 am
Absolutely. It was only a few days ago so the jitters are still with me.

Reblogged this on Rebecca's Universe and commented:
” I am fascinated about what made them who they are, the little things that most people would never know about them but shaped the person that they became. ” Psychologist in me tend to call that observing or research. Rationalizing?
July 14th, 2013 at 6:10 pm
I suppose it is research, just without any particular reason behind the research. Most people choose their subjects of interest carefully, but most the people I am fascinated with I have no personal interest in or fascination with the person themselves, just how they became who they are whether I like that person or not.
July 18th, 2013 at 3:01 pm
I very much identify with your obsession with other people’s stories. Everyone has a story to tell and I see these stories as the raw material, the clay with which to make the pot. I like to mix them up and use them to create new story lines for my fictional characters. Thank you for following my blog – I talk about this in my blog of a few months ago: http://pennyfrances.wordpress.com/2013/03/03/the-moral-qualms-of-a-story-thief/
Look forward to hearing more from you. 🙂
